This is how happy Michael Schumacher was after winning the San Marino Grand Prix on the Imola track!
And he wasn't alone, thousands of italians were more then happy that Ferrari won this years Grand Prix and the cheers were almost as loud as the sounds from the engines as Schumacher crossed the finish line milliseconds before Fernando Alonso.
Schumacher took pole position in yesterdays qualification and took a reassuring lead in his first stint leaving everyone far behind. However after his first pitstop his Ferrari wasn't as fast anymore and he slowly started to lose his lead.
The second half of the race was a long battle between Alonso and Schumacher, with well calculated pitstops and clever tactics. But keeping Alonso behind him even tho Alonsos car was faster was no match for veteran Schumacher who kept the lead and eventually won the race.
There was a lot of safety talk before the race as usual on Imola, which is the track at where world champion Ayrton Senna crashed and died in 1994.
Still, there were a couple of incidents that could have had the same tragical outcome as in 1994. First, Aguri-Hondas Yuji Ide miscalculated his speed and ran straight into Christijan Albers who made a spectacular crash flipping his car over several times. Luckily no one was hurt and Albers walked away without injuries.
Later in the race, Jenson Button and his Honda pit crew made a misstake during one of his pitstops, and the lollipop-man, the guy that holds the stop sign infront of the driver during the pitstop had a mental melt down and raised the sign way too early and Jenson took off with the fuel hoze still connected, sweeping several in the pit crew off their feet and spraying gas all over. Luckily there were no sparks...
McLarens Juan Pablo Montoya fought his way up from seventh place to an honorable third place. Felipe Massa kept his 4th place through out the race with Kimi Räikönen coming in on fifth, Mark Webber worked his way up from tenth to sixth and Jenson Button who started on a second place couldn't recover from his pit stop misshap and finished on seventh place and finally Giancarlo Fisichella came in on eight place.
Overall a good race today at Imola in Italy! I'll be back on may 7th at Nürburgring in Germany! |
