REP. PATRICK MCHENRY (R) NORTH CAROLINA: Eighty-five percent of minimum wage earners in this country are teens, or adults who live alone, or second earners - a married couple, one goes and works part time. Eighty-five percent of them fall in those categories. So they're talking about making a minimum wage on this and providing for a family of 10 or whatever - it's just empty rhetoric and crazy talk!
REP. GEORGE MILLER (D) CALIFORNIA: This is the longest period in history in law without a wage increase. During that time the minimum wage has dropped to its lowest buying power in 51 years. The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 would increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour over three steps over the next 2 years. Raising the minimum wage is critical to fighting the middle class squeeze in this country.
Minimum Wage Increase
LLOYD: There you've heard it, arguments against, and in support of, raising the minimum wage. The latter won the day in the house, though...with 315 representatives voting Wednesday to increase the federal minimum wage...and 116 voting against it. Eighty-two Republicans crossed over party lines to support the measure. So what could this mean for you, if that's what you make? Well, the government requires employers to pay at least five-15 an hour. That could go up to seven-25 an hour, with the proposed two-dollar and ten-cent increase. That probably sounds pretty good to you guys -- A lot of jobs offered to high school students pay just the minimum. But it could create a strain on business owners and cause prices to rise.
AS REPORTED BY CNN
Now that is awesome. There hasn't been an increase in the Minimum wage in the US since Clinton was in office the first time. That is over 10 years. It still has to be approved by the Senate but it is a big step for the US economy for the little man. I know alot of people trying to make it on minimum wage but with this increase it will make it easier. |
