Well, here we go...the ship names all have a common theme, see if you can spot it. :D
Born on the Nebula-class USS Santa Ana in 2379, James Brackley was the son of Chief Engineer Richard Brackley and Petty Officer Maria Gerard. Concerned about bringing their child up on a starship exploring an increasingly hazardous galaxy, the couple retired from active duty and moved back to Richard's home city of Newcastle, England.
Richard went into a civilian career repairing and maintaining a fleet of cargo transports for Quayside Shipping, and James spent a lot of his childhood in the workshops. He started helping his father with simple engineering and maintenance jobs in his early teens, showing a natural talent for repairing ship systems. This affinity, along with the stories of the city's celebrated shipbuilding history that his father's coworkers told him, spurred James Brackley to pursue a career in starship engineering. He continued to assist at Quayside, taking on more complex jobs as he learnt and grew older. At eighteen, James decided to follow in his parents' footsteps and apply for Starfleet Academy. He was accepted and enrolled into several engineering courses, intending to become an engineer in one of Starfleet's shipbuilding facilities.
Richard Brackley, still in contact with many of his Starfleet colleagues, managed to arrange a study/work apprenticeship for James in Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards between semesters. It was here that James worked on the Enterprise E during one of its routine maintenance visits, an experience that sent his career aspirations in a different direction; he started researching the history of the Enterprise in his free time, eventually finding logs made by Montgomery Scott during his time on the original Enterprise and after his recovery from the USS Jenolan. Commander Scott's accounts of his adventures, as well as his affection for the starship he served on, inspired James Brackley to take extra courses at the Academy, including the Bridge Officer's Test. He was assigned to the USS Luckytown upon graduation in 2402, and made the rank of Chief Engineer over his seven years in the starship's engineering section.
He was assigned the role of Second Officer weeks before the Borg attack that killed a significant portion of the Luckytown's crew, effectively leaving him as the commanding officer. Impressed by the engineer's bravery and quick thinking, Admiral Quinn made the position permanent. Soon afterwards, the Luckytown's crew was transferred to the more up-to-date USS Thunder Road, a Nova-class science ship.
Though his home is now the Captain's chair, James can usually be found in Engineering during his off-duty hours.
